Fairview Montessori School

1501 Jefferson Ave. Louisville, CO  80027

Fairview’s early childhood program is designed to meet the needs of the 3 to 6 year old. Attendance is for 5, 4, or 3 days per week unless enrolled in the kindergarten program.

Half Day—Children attend either the morning or the afternoon class. A typical half day is as follows:

Class opens with 15 minutes of line time to discuss the weather, calendar, current events, and sing songs that incorporate large motor movement and coordination. While on line, the teacher takes attendance and acknowledges each child, and she also may present a new work or lesson before dismissing the children one by one to choose a work or activity. During the following uninterrupted 2 hour work period, children are free to choose a work from any of the 5 distinct areas of the Montessori classroom. They may work in small groups or individually, or receive a lesson from the teacher. Children go outside for 20-30 minutes, weather permitting. Class ends on line with a story and songs.

Extended Day—Children attend both the morning and the afternoon class, or they attend the morning class and then nap. For those who do not nap, there is a 20-30 minute rest period following lunch.

Full Day—Children follow an extended day schedule and may be dropped of as early as 730a and picked up as late as 530p.

Kindergarten—Children ages 5 and 6 years with previous Montessori experience, or with director approval, are eligible for the third year of our program. The third year, or Kindergarten year, culminates the Montessori early childhood program and provides the older children the opportunity for leadership as well as for continued social growth and development. Kindergartners meet 5 days per week. The first part of the day is spent in a mixed-age setting that allows the more experienced children to serve as role models for the younger students and to reinforce the skills acquired during the first two years of Montessori. The latter part of the day is spent with their peers, enabling them to engage in a more concentrated period of advanced work and to go on special outings, for example, short walks to the local library or a field trip to the planetarium.

Before & After School—Before and after school care is provided for an additional fee. During this time, children may play with blocks, look at books, draw pictures, or listen to music. They also may help the teachers set up for class.

DURING THE DAY

Snacks—vegetables, fruit, crackers—are offered at various times throughout the day. Children prepare their own snacks, pour a glass of water, and wash their own dishes before moving on to another work. Due to the prevalence of serious food allergies and for each child’s safety, Fairview Montessori is peanut and tree-nut free.

Lunch is an extension of the Montessori classroom and is an exercise in grace and courtesy. During this time, children are seated together to eat nutritious, balanced lunches brought from home. Lunch is optional for those enrolled in our half day program.

Naps/Rest: A nap or rest period is provided for children <5 years who are at school for more than 4 hours. Rest time follows lunch and is approximately 20-30 minutes. Naptime is roughly 130-330p. Children who awake early may join the afternoon class.

Playground: Each class goes outside for at least 20-30 minutes each day depending on the weather.

School Year

The school year is 9 months long and consists of a fall and spring semester.

Summer Program

The summer program consists of three sessions. Current and former students, and new students beginning in the fall may attend any or all summer sessions.

While summers at Fairview are less formal, with more outdoor time and special art and cooking projects, all the basic Montessori materials are available to the children.

For current students, the summer program offers the safety and comfort of a familiar environment.

For new students, summers are the perfect time to become familiar with the school, meet the teachers, and make new friends. Attending even 1 or 2 sessions is invaluable in easing the transition from home and preparing for the school year.

Application to the summer program is separate from the school year. When they are available in the spring, summer applications will be posted on the Forms page.
